I just heard the entire Mary's Child and Jewel of Paris. Lovely set of songs with the same central character. My French is lousy, perhaps I could beg the lyrics for Jewel of Paris to see the name of Mary's child in print as his foster mother refered to him?
I heard your live performance on the CBC Radio 2 website ("Nathan Rogers at Sumerfest"). Lovely guitar and technique. Please spend a little more time tuning it: flat strings detract from the lovely lyric and heart of the song.
Thanks for your music.

I do not see your name up for Stanfest 2009 but sure wish it was there.

Can't stop listening! Truly phenominal. Don't quit what you are doing. Oh, and if you could possibly keep me from going insane:
What is the line immediately following "He was brown in the shade....." in Jewel of Paris?
HI PAUL - NOTE FROM THE EDITOR - THE LINE IS "THE BILLOWED SAILS MADE"

How in the hell has True Stories not been nominated for a Juno? It should be up there for the "best traditional/roots - solo" alongside Francey, Rutledge, Lund and Oh Susanna for sure.
If you had the amounts of "roots" on your head as you do in your music you'd look like chewbacca!
Anyway, I love your music. I'm yet to catch a show, I'm always out of the country when your near my town. That Jewel of Paris is unreal, among the rest!
Thanks for playing your music!

Nathan, your Dad would be very proud of you, as I'm sure your Mum is. You have the same gift your Dad had, so take the torch and run like hell. Don't forget to be yourself. You are not your Dad re-incarnated, you are Nathan, in your own right. You are every bit as gifted in the way you make music, as your Dad was, so pay homage to him now and then, but do your own thing, you are great. I hope you get the recognition your Dad did not, as far as I'm concerned. Give 'er shit.

Nathan...alot of music fans have had the pleasure of enjoying your father's music before your own. Unfortunately I, on the other hand was not exposed to that... I thank you so much for dropping the CD off at the store... I hope that I soon will have the pleasure of seeing you live!

What a voice you have! It's extraordinary. I've been a devoted folkie since my teens, and just discovered you. How could I have missed you for so long? I can't travel so please come sing in the Washington DC area soon.
What your government did to support of the arts rivals the stupidity of the Bush administration. (I can't go lower than that.)
Best wishes to you, I'm off to hunt down your albums and will drive my household crazy with them.

Chiming in on your show at the Northern Lights Nov 15. You are charming and personable, you play guitar extremely well, and your voice is wonderful to listen to.
Your repetoire is getting more varied and interesting, but please don't stop singing your Dad's songs. To have gone from hearing him live a couple of times a year to NOTHING is still so very hard to take. Sing them with the love they deserve. Your own songs are very dear already, they are Nathan's voice and nobody else's. I look forward to your next cd.
And I have to say, there is no one like the Rogers men to make my soul ache with the beauty of their music and I end up blubbering during EVERY concert :)
Nice to see the folk fest people there, especially if it means you'll be gracing our stages in August.
Be well, Nathan, blessings in heaps on you and your young family.

Do you know if Nathan is going to be in Nova Scotia for either the Blues Fest up in Chevrie/Walton or at his Dad's fest this summer? I was hoping to see him while I lived out west and missed him on this end now, timing sucks. Anyhow curious, looks like a pretty full tour around and back? Take care...

A few weeks ago a man sent me an email message for Nathan Rogers. It was extremely moving and unusual in its passion. While trying to forward it to Nathan I commited an email faux pas and hit the spam button instead. As a result, I could not retrieve the message. If you have relatively recently sent a message to Nathan's manager and did not get a reply, please try to send it again or post it here. In hitting the spam button I may have blocked you from my account. Please do not be discouraged and I hope I can reach you here! It was a lovely message!

Wow.
I first heard your father's music just a year ago on the local college station on a wet windy night they played "One Warm Line" and I came home and googled his name. I sat and watched the documentary twice that night and was moved to tears to find he was no longer with us, this wonderful talent that I'd just discovered I'd never see in person.
The apple doesn't far fall from the tree. I hope to see and hear you play someday.
Please come play in Oregon

I was fortunate enough to hear Nathan (my first time)recently at the Eaglewood Folk Festival. Along with Evelyn Parry, they did a workshop called "my dead dad". Having lost my father recently, it was somewhat upsetting but thoroughly enjoyable. I became an instant fan. I look forward to seeing Nathan at his own shows, and I plan to see as many as possible (I will be at the Hugh's Room tribute as well as the other Toronto area shows that are coming up.. Thank you again. Music is everything, keep the faith!
PS: Garnett's home made beer was a treat.

Hello Nathan:
I have a daughter, Garnet V. Burk, named because her Father & I so enjoyed the Roger's family music while rebuilding our wooden ketch in Port Townsend, WA. Would you consider traveling down to the western States to play? We have a strong maritime tradition here in Washington State. Port Townsend, and my home town, Vashon Island, would welcome you. Vashon even has a small theatre where Jimmy Messina just played to a loyal group of followers. We've also hosted Shawn Colvin and Ani DiFranco. Please consider heading south - we would welcome you and I could set up the venue! Kathleen

Wow - just checked your itinerary and to see that you will be in Nunavut, just a couple of days before Mariposa --- incredible. Also -- checking your schedule thru next year --- YIKES --- you're a busy lad! I go way back to Mariposa '89(Molson Park), when you were just a "young'un".
The "Workshop Schedule" sounds amazing for this year's Festival.
See You next week and hopefully, you'll have exciting Iqaluit photos.

Sorry but the closest I am coming to Calgary is the Tongue on the Post Folk Festival on January 31 of 2009 in Medecine Hat. Sorry it can't be sooner or closer!
Thanks everyone who supports the show, the cd, the man himself. I am at work keeping bills paid and family fed with a restaurant job so I have little time for music. Soon, however, I will hit the road and squeeze some creative juices into a new disc. Most of it is written but now I have to learn the songs. It's a strange process I may share with you sometime.....

Nathan,
Here are some references to Richard Feynman, the physicist interested in Tuvan throat singing which my daughter and I mentioned to you after the Madison concert. The first one has a link to Friends of Tuva.

The next website is a description of his last autobiography which Jen thought you might appreciate:

And this is a description of the book his colleague wrote about the trip they hoped to take to Tuva:

Hope there is a song in it somewhere for you.

Sir,
My daughter was at your concert last night in Madison, Wisconson. All kudos to you; she particularly enjoyed the 'throat' singing. She too was shocked by the dearth of her age and yours in the audience.I have brought her up in the music of both your father and uncle. She related to me the 'Barrett's Privateers' parody you did and am quite envious indeed.Hope someday to see you in person.Looking forward to the release of your next CD/album...yea, I'm 'old'.

Nathan,
I greatly enjoyed your performance in Madison, Wisconsin tonight!! Thanks for your energy and work that was evident in show. (And the comment that learning to throatsing took about 2 years of daily practice). This guy is from Madison and is a throatsinger and nature mimic (I guess I would call it) at http://www.myspace.com/dbpedersen or http://www.skullsofheaven.com/index.php?page=label#392
DB is an interesting cat to be sure.
Thanks again,

And don't worry, a bass player did me a good turn once. Hitchiking outside of Banff, I got a ride from John Stockfish. It's a funny story. Take care, sir.

Thanks very much! In case you are wondering, the rings are so large that it would be more likely for me to lose an ear than to have it cut through. Just physics I guess. Thank you so much for supporting my music. My whole family appreciates it.

Thanks very much, I will take good care of my voice. You are wrong about one thing, though. I sort of resemble my dad but I'm much better looking.

My boyfriend and I came from Indpls to see you in Chicago a couple of weekends ago. I confess I came to see you because of your father and Garnet. I found that you are a wonderful performer and songwriter independently of your famous family. Your family has given me so much pleasure over the years. I am looking forward to your next CD. I second the wish for 'Mountains Moving Aside' for the CD. And thank you so much for performing Garnet's Homemade Beer, I had only heard of it in legend, I did not think it really existed.

Nathan,
Great show in Iqaluit tonight. It was tear-, joy-, laugh-, awe- and every other type of inspiring you can think of. Looking forward to Canada Day!
On another note, any plans to play in Newfoundland any time soon?
Finally, are their plans to put the "Mountains Moving Aside" song on the next album?
Cheers, Denise

Dear Nathan,
As I watched you at Bill's Blues Bar on Sunday evening with your earrings, I thought of our Saturday dinner and your talking about your daughter and your imminent return to be with her again. I recalled the grabby fingers of my children before and after that age and how their mother ended up not wearing any jewelry while they were around. I hope your daughter has moved beyond the "grabby" stage. Then all you need be concerned about is the mountain goat stage, climbing up tables, chairs, and bookcases, and--a few years older--spreading out arms and legs and moving up the sides of a doorway. We enjoyed the concerts and look forward to your return to Chicago.
Best,
David

Hey Nathan,
I was flippin through the diales on my truck radio last night, looking for something worth a damn to listen to, and I stumbled upon on of your shows. I grew up on old-time country and bluegrass music, and I have always loved folk music as well. I have a bluegrass band with a couple of my highschool friends, and I love to hear new stuff. Anyway, I wanted to tell you that your music is fantastic, I have never listened to "Northwest Passage" before, and honestly made my eyes mist. Good work partner, and keep it up, you've got one more fan here.

To Nathan or whomever is scvreening this: Just wondering if I could enlist the help of Nathan and Stan Rodgers fans to track down a dear old friend of mine? Wouldn't it be cool for a fan to find a lost loved one through your website? His name is Dan Cory and he was originally from Manitou Beach, Saskatchewan. He had a cabin there but I hear it burnt down and he moved away. Thought I might've seen him at Bufalo Lake (Alberta) a few years ago? I think about him all the time and often wonder whats's become of him. He was a bit of a travelling hippie kinda guy (be in his 50's now) - loved folk music and hung with a group called the Tractor Trolls many years ago. Anyone knowing his where abouts please contact me at:
natworks@telusplanet.net or if Dan sees this, call NATALIE at 403-809-1579. I'm in Alberta and I
miss you Danieleson! I'm going to see Nathan in Calgary on May 10th.
If you can't post this, well, it was worth a shot. If you do, Nathan I will be in debited to you and will tell people about your BIG HEART. Thanks in advance........
Sincerely,
Natalie in Airdrie.

Nathan,
I posted the review below on the Springsteen discussion board I frequent..THANK YOU
Folk home concert series, a private show for 50. Nathan Rogers is the son of the deceased legendary Canadian folk singer Stan Rogers. Nathan Rogers sounds much like his old man. Nathan Rogers is his own man, his song writing and singing talent just grabs you by the throat. Comfortable in various musical idioms (folk, blues, historical, seething political commentary, parody), he is akin to a five tool ball player, he can do it all. FUNNY. INCREDIBLY SHARP, bursting with intelligence, humor, edge, piss and vinegar. And that magical stage presence and ability to relate to a crowd, even if a bunch of old farts!
My college crowd had been huge Stan Rogers fans.
My best friend Greg and I lucked into this. I had never heard of 'home concert series'. I was searching for Stan videos on utube, and came across Nathan, and a show at someone's home in Falls Church!!
So I hiked to Charlottesville, then we hiked to Falls Church. Two things became clear. Greg and I were younger, and more casually dressed than most (Greg the only African-American, myself the only Philly Jew from WV). AND, many talked to us with superficially friendly banter, but we were mostly being talked AT, none of the normal QUESTIONS/inquiries ("what do you do for a living?" "where are you from?" "what is the average cruising airspeed velocity of an unladen European Swallow?" NADA)
Which did not matter. Cuz we spent most of the time talking to and with Nathan. From politics, to Canada, to Rick Wakemen/Yes concert stories, jokes and great old movies (including those we saw in school to try to scare you away from drinking and driving with the burnt bodies and car wrecks, to health classes showing tertiary syphillis, to REEFER MADNESS), it was a PLEASURE to be able to spend time with and swap stories with such an interesting bright young TALENT in such an informal atmosphere.
Who really knows, but it seemed like Nathan found kindred spirits in us also. More importantly the MUSIC was ALIVE.
Either 28 or 29 (and 4 when his father died), hair shaved with a mohawk, studs in both ears and tongue, goatee and black shades, Nathan Rogers lit the place up. Being with my best friend, talking with this artist, and sitting a foot and a half from him for the second magical set of distinctive great live music, was a stirring evocative life affirming blast.
He has a record! BUY IT!! He contines to tour the U.S. GO SEE HIM if you have a chance. The record is really good, but seeing him LIVE was the real hook/treat.
When you see him, ask him about Rick Wakeman...
His web site, reviews, and access to (what a resonant title) TRUE STORIES, his record.

Hey everyone!
I'm way out in Long Island New York, in a place called Stony Brook. Really lovely countryside and a wonderful little town. I don't have a lot of time to write back to all of you but I will catch up when I get home. Thanks for all your support, I cannot explain how much it means to me. Cheers! and Thanks!

Just returned from the concert at USB University Cafe and immediately put on Stan's music to reaffirm what we all believe - that when nature and nurture are put to the test they both exceed expectation.
Thank you, Nathan, for a wonderful afternoon of reminiscing with old tunes and being introduced to new ones.

Hi Nathan - I've been meaning to write for months now, ever since receiving True Stories. Wow, I knew I would love it, I just didn't know how much. "Mary's Child" brings me to tears every time I play it. "Three Fishers" is such a fine tribute to your Dad. I can't wait for more!
I sing with the Aurora Celebration Choir, a community choir here in Vancouver. Our winter concert is this Saturday and our final song is "Watching the Apples Grow". I have volunteered to introduce the song and will dedicate it to Stan's memory. Man, he must be proud of you!
Hope to see you out here sometime soon.

Hey Nathan ...
I played for your Dad and Garnet -- between David Allan Edie and Jim Morrison: 25 very intense gigs over a span of months – and lived in your Dundas basement between tours east and west.
I had every intention of coming to see you in Kingston tonight, at Sweet Folk All, but I’m felled by a rotator cuff injury which is cutting into my sleep and making my waking moments generally miserable.
I won’t miss you next time.
Please pass on my best to your Mom, David, Beth and Kate. You were – when last I saw you – the apple of your Dad’s eye.
On our one and only babysitting episode, I took you for ice cream and you fell on your face walking home (sugar high).
There wasn’t a lot of blood, but I think it was enough to convince your Mom that bass players were not necessarily preferred babysitters.
Your U-Tube samples really capture the sound of the old man’s pipes. Long may you run!

New album - really hope the "Mountains' song is on it. Also the sequel to Mary's Child.
We'll spread the word, hope to egt a bunch of folks out to your Halifax show, and some of the Ontario ones...
Cheers,

We loved your dad's music so much and were so delighted to find that you are as gifted and talented as he was. Unfortunately, we never had the opportunity to watch a live performance of your dad's and we are so thankful that we may be able to live this dream through you.
We love the fact that you honor your father by performing some of his great works, and are also delighted with your own creations and the new flavor you give to your dad's songs.
We will continue to follow your progress and wish you all success and happiness. God Bless You!

Hey Nathan! It's the gal from Airdrie who told you that your voice makes her cry. I was so thrilled to actually be meeting you that that was the only intelligent thing I could think of saying say! Your voice and your music unleash a flood of emotions from the very fibre of my being. I was not expecting to hear "Field Behind the Plow" which is a song my buddy Dan and I used to sing every weekend when we got together(we were both BIG Stan fans). Never could make it through that song without tears. It also made me miss my dear friend, too. And what an honor and a priveledge it was to sing "Northwest Passage" with the son of Stan Rogers! Thank you for one of the best experiences I've had in life, Nathan. Can't wait to see you when you're back in Calgary this spring. I will finally get to hear Jim's band (the Buccaneers), too. Met him about six years ago, but never did make it out to hear them play. God bless and protect you in your journey through life.

Hi Nathan. I caught your concert in Portage la Prairie MB last month and I can truthfully say I have never been more impressed with a concert and your ability to carry on a legacy in the Rogers family tradition. I was prepared to hear a young man playing his father's songs, and riding on his father's coattails, but was pleasantly surprised to find that this was not so. You have the talent and drive to do it all on your own, which I'm sure you will accomplish. I have always been a fan of your father's, and will equally follow you in your career.
Best of luck.....Your father is looking down on his greatest source of pride......Greg

Nathan:
I was wonderful thing to meet you and hear your music on Feb 8 in Canmore. Allowing us to sing along with you was great. I look forward to seeing you again in May when you arrive in Calgary. You shook my hand and patted me on the back and said,"have a safe trip back to Red Deer" On that 3 hour drive home I pledged to sit with my guitar and start writing music again. Your performance and good nature inspired me. Keep up the good work and look forward to the next "kitchen party".
Best Regards,
John
